For the Commenters

I am so grateful for those of you who have commenting on this blog. I would just like to say “hello” to each of you personally. Jon Saur—Your comments are hilarious. That last story...I'm still laughing. I needed a non-"God talk" comment without purpose to give me a good laugh. I can't wait to hear which professor that was. P.S. Please don't use the word "gay" on my blog. Rich & Miriam—It was so wonderful to hear from you. Sorry we didn’t make it to Hawaii…our loss, I guess. Thank you for your prayers. Bob—I can’t believe you would put this thing together for me and then pull out the “get out of Africa free” card. I hope you are able to live vicariously through me. Thank you so much for your guidance and mentorship, and for connecting me with Emmanuel. Russ & Janet—You two are simply amazing. I’m not surprised to hear that you are feeling called to return to “the bode”. I am praying for guidance and direction as you continue to pursue that. You are wonderful mentors in our lives and Devon and I are so thankful for you. Gillian—My new other ‘lil sis (next to Tiff). Thank you for the idea of creating a blog. It was a great idea. I appreciate your encouragement. Mom & Dad—I can always count on reading a comment from you. Thank you for your support, encouragement, and prayers. Love you lots. Tiff—My firstborn ‘lil sis. I know you’re taking care of my beautiful bride. Thank you so much. And, well done with the Kodak commercial scene on the beach!! Clark—Interim High School Director. Thanks for taking leadership with our young disciples. Aren’t they awesome?!! We have the best youth group in the world! By the way, I don’t see how you get Robert Gulay thoughts from the word “blog”. Oh well. Miss you, brother. Jessy O—Thanks for teaching at PCOM for me. Your words have been an encouragement for us in the past. I hear you’re planning a trip out here with high schoolers. Let’s talk over a steaming hot grande cup of Starby’s. Aw, that sounds so good right now. Jessy Lund—Dude, thanks for popping in and saying “hi”. I can’t wait for the next teaching at Chabad. Give Rabbi Marcus my regards and tell him I bought a prayer shawl! I appreciate your encouragement. Courtney Howe—My one faithful PCOM high school commenter. Thank you so much for your prayers and encouraging words. The last post about the food was mainly for you! Wakeling—Great to hear from you, brother. I’m glad word got out to the Havurah brothers. Say “hi” to them for me. Wood—I hear the wives are hanging out while we’re both gone. That’s what I like to hear!! I wish you were here, my friend. Hey, I sent you a text message. Did you get it? And most importantly, my beautiful bride—As great as this trip is, it would be a thousand times better if you were here. We must not find ourselves 20 years down the road without having done anything like this together. I miss you sooo much!! And I love you. Obvi. If I have forgotten anyone, my apologies.

And for those who have been just reading—Thanks for tuning in to my exhaustingly long postings. I love you all and miss you very much. My time out here is so fruitful and I love every bit of it. However, when you’re on the other side of the world, a day seems like a thousands years. So it seems like I’ve been away for a very long time. And I know in Orange County, days fly like the wind and it may seem like I just left. Some of you might not even realize I’m gone. That’s funny. Anyway, it means a lot to me. So, thank you.

I am on my way to do a live interview on a Christian radio station here about Youth Ministry in America. Apparently, it's a new idea out here and they're about to put on a large youth conference for the first time. It should be fun. I'll give you the report later. Tomorrow I leave for Madagascar for twelve days. There will be lots of preaching, evangelising, etc. Please pray for safe travel and solid rest. Also, I'm told that the motel we're staying at doesn't have internet. Hopefully, I will find one near by. Until next time...

Chris,
Bible Verse for the Day: "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" (Phil 4:13). Hey, you might feel "inadequate" to go up against global giants, but remember, GOD IS NOT INADEQUATE! (See 1Cor.1:26-27). Sometimes our presence alone is the blessing God wants us to pass to others. That's how I felt about our mission trip to Mada in '02 like I didn't have anything particular to offer but after praying about it, thought, hmm, maybe God just wants me to show up! Hey, you have so much to offer--your loving smile which captures any audience, your heartwarming remarks, your kind and gentle ways, your thoughtful words of encouragement, and your compassion and caring which emanates from your presence. Dude, you are wired! (Knock 'em dead in Tana!) We're all with you and praying for you!!

Hey man...Great words to the fans. It takes a lot longer to write than to read. Your stuff is not too long, even for the most casual reader, especially since it's so well done. The Hilton in Tanna has a good internet facility right in the loby. There are incredible places and animals not found anywhere else in the world in Madagascar. Hope you get to see some of that stuff. The Pres. is Christian as is most of the governmet now. They ran the French out a few years ago and I bet the place is prospering. Devon handles your pups so well. They love her and seem to do pretty much whatever she wants. Esch is planning a ski trip for 300 to 400 this winter. Sounds like fun huh? Bet you wish you could do that. Reports are his new rave is super (PE is all excited anyway). All here just plain miss you painfully. Any intrest in a cheesburger or a Pedros Taco? Gotcha. Henryp

Hi Chris! I'm still laughing about Saur's last comment. Who does that? I know I sometimes had (still have)crazy thoughts now and then, but I don't act on them if I realize ahead of time how ridiculous they are. Gillian nailed it with her comment on Westmont's need for screening the profs a little better.

I've got a story for you. It's not nearly as funny as Saur's, but here it goes. I did get up early this morning and took the pups for a jog. (Yah...I was proud of myself). All was fine with the world...sun was shining, birds were chirping, we didn't run through any gnarly spider webs, and then as we're running on Chrisanta right in front of Mount of Olives Church this HUGE Coyote pranced along side of us on the opposite side of the street, crossed in front of us and scurried off into the bushes. It was definitely bigger than both Sidney and Jackson. Instead of barking at the beast Sidney let out her blood curdling "seal" cry and would not stop until we got home. I could not calm her down or keep her at a heal. So the neighborhood got a wake up call whether they wanted it or not, and my arm is out of socket.

So you're leaving for Madagascar tomorrow and I so wish I was there with you. I'm sorry I'm not coming to meet you there. Fortunately for me you were right about the days flying by here in Orange County; however, it's rather unfortunate that you're there alone where the days seem like weeks. Tomorrow marks 2 weeks since you've been gone and we're almost halfway through our time apart. I've been keeping myself very busy. And yes, Jen and I are meeting for dinner tonight. Tomorrow night I get to hang out with Trisha; Saturday I'm helping Janet at a wedding; and Sunday is Church, lunch with Melissa Klaeb (yeah!) and Walk in the evening. Lots happening!

I miss you, Fool!

Gitch, Well brother, you are a long way from home, but I've walked the same streets of Dar just a year ago. It's crazy to think that you're possibly standing where I was one year ago. I just finished reading all your posts from beginning to present. It's great to catch up on all that you've been doing. You're in my thoughts bro. I know what it's like being in those places, it's not easy at all. Stay strong brother!! I ran into Nate and Paige at In n' Out the other day. It was great to see them. They're thinking about you bro. I just got an email from Jer and Hoku and they said they're doing a night of worship on Wed. night, sweet. I am looking forward to more stories, I'm totally stealing them and using them for talks, because it's like Rob Bell wrote, your stories are my stories. I love you brother and I'll continue to pray for you and when you get back the Rock and the Esh are taking you and your bride to dinner. Peace

Hi Chris

I felt so special when you mentioned me so thank you. I am looking forward to the fasting and raising money for the Invisible Children thing in Febuary. I also wanted to thank you for answering the question about the food. Here is another question you could answer when you have time: What did you have to do to prepare for your trip to Africa? Still praying for you.

Hi Chris,
Wow! The Lord has taken you on some amazing journey hasn't He. This is so awesome being able to read about your journey. The Lord is so precious and faithful to us. There is a scripture in 3 John 4: that says, I have no greater joy than to know that my children walk in truth. God is faithful and wants the best for his children. Chris, God has you right where He wants you. And the most precious thing about that, He has walked the path before you all the way preparing it for you. He's given you every tool needed to get the job done. Again WOW!

I woke up yesterday (thurs.) to the news on my clock radio. It was the AP news speaking about the talks in the DRC and how they are trying to bring peace to that nation. I thought OH MY GOODNESS my son-in-law is there and right in the middle of it. I'm so proud.

Well listen I must go and get ready to leave for a womens retreat. Charlie said he will write later. We are praying for you. Hope to go and see Devon this next week. All our love and prayers. Bye Jani and Charlie

p.s. I have no idea how Andy could ever top this! Ha Ha !

Hey Chris,

By now you are probably planning for the world-wide evangelical conference which starts tomorrow. Wow, I can't believe it's almost October 1! I know you will meet many important people from around the world and form many new relationships and I believe building personal relationships like you are doing there is what God is calling you to do because then you can allow God to open the door to offering those wonderful people a relationship with Christ, the ultimate in personal relationships. This is so awesome!

Just remember, you have the Spirit of God within you; you are God's creation. (So, pass it on bro!!)

We're cheering for you!!

Oh yeah, and Mom said to bring em all home for dinner...

I think she was a bit rushed trying to get out of Mammoth this am and back home. We listened to Thompson tapes all the way. Hope you are able to get in some studying, though the road experience is worth years of classroom and more. The playoffs start soon and the Angels are looking good. They're already in it. Fire season started here this week. Big fires but they saved all the homes...Ventura and Burbank this time. Cotn will be in OC Oct 26-30. You might get some face time with Chris and Debbie Clark and some of the Africa kids if you would like. Have a great time in Tanna. Wish we were there too. There's a Mi key D's there if you're that desparate yet. Otherwise the food at the Hilton was good when we were there. Blessings. Henryp

Chris!

I am so sorry that it's taken me this long to finally reply to one of your postings! Rest assured though, I HAVE been reading them and have also been praying for you often since you've been gone. (Also, I can breath for the first time...haha yay for Kelly Clarkson!)

I emailed you with a bon voyage a few days before you left...hope that you got it.

Honestly, reading your postings I feel like I'm reading some published journal accounts of a person's grand and mysterious adventure to Africa and I have to remind myself all the time that it's you! I get so worked up and exicted with all of these things that you are experiencing, and as God is developing my heart for Africa more and more, I have to admit I'm a bit jealous that you get to go off and have a big adventure. But as always, the Lord's timing prevails and I will presently have to be content living vicariously through you!

Your wisdom and insight are, as always, refreshing and challenging. Your passion for loving and serving the people you meet compels me. Thank you! I can't wait to be able to talk to you about the trip and see how God has developed your vision. I hope that if PCOM does intend to go on a trip to Africa sometime in the future, you won't forget about inviting your Northern California extension.

Keep writing and I will keep reading!

We heard today from Devon that Chris probably will not be able to post again in the next few days due to internet problems in Madagascar. Thanks to all of you who have participated from Karen & Devon (if I may be so blod as to speak for her) and me. (Chris has already expressed his thanks for all those commenting) Continuing to post messages for the next few days while he is out of touch would be good I think, letting him know we are all thinking of and praying for him often. Bless you all. (or is it ya'll?) Henryp

Hey Chris

I know I have not typed in a little while, so sorry :). I was invited to go with my friend to her church the other day(Saddleback Church and no I am not leaving PCOM)and the lesson was on serving. One of the verses that we read really stood out for me at least. I think this verse could apply to some aspect of everyones life(work, school, any place where you have to deal with people basically). This is the verse: "Work hard and cheerfully at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and the Master you are serving is Christ" Colossians 3:23-24. I hope to hear more from you soon when the Internet connection is back up. Still praying for you.

From, Courtney
